Frequent questions

Recipes
What is deboned meat?

The deboned meat we use in our Dry and Freeze Dried ranges is a high-quality source of protein. Bones are separated and discarded, allowing the meat to be directly incorporated into our recipes. It is the only product that can be referred to, marketed or labelled as “meat”.

What is free-range chicken?

Free range refers to chickens that have been raised on farms with access to the outside for part of the day and have been fed with corn-based vegetable feed. This agricultural practice improves the animals’ wellbeing and helps to reduce stress which, in turn, improves the quality of the meat.

Do your recipes for cats contain high enough levels of taurine?

Yes, our recipes for cats contain taurine levels considerably higher than the minimum requirements needed to classify a food as complete and balanced. The amount of taurine shown on the packaging refers to added taurine and not the total amount. The total amount comprises the added taurine plus the taurine from ingredients of animal origin.

What’s the difference between the Norwegian salmon in Selected and the salmon in Original?

From a nutritional point of view, there is no difference between the salmon in the Original range and the Norwegian salmon in the Selected recipes. Both are equally nutritious and healthy. However, using exclusively Norwegian salmon allows us to have control over ingredient origin and guarantees that we always use the same quality salmon. Norway is the largest producer of Atlantic salmon and follows strict quality guidelines and food health
programs, with farms located in the cold and crystal-clear waters of the fjords, far from maritime traffic. In Norway, salmon is sustainably bred, ensuring both the wellbeing of the fish themselves and the protection of the ecosystem.

Are all the wet and freeze-dried products suitable (as long as there are no underlying medical conditions) for senior pets, including both dogs and cats?

Yes, all our products are suitable for senior animals.

What does dehydrated proteins mean?

It means that the ingredient, for example, chicken, has been dehydrated and trimmed, resulting in a concentrated protein. This ingredient is a concentrated source of animal protein, essential amino acids and minerals such as calcium, which helps to increase protection levels, something that’s necessary in dog and cat nutrition.

Can I mix WET ORIGINAL recipes with Nature’s Variety Dry recipes?
Yes, as long as daily recommended allowances are not exceeded.
What benefits do cereals provide when used in dog food?

Wholegrain cereals provide a significant quantity of carbohydrates, alongside protein and other nutrients such as vitamins. Like cats, dogs have no absolute need for carbohydrates, though this is true for most mammals. However, carbohydrates do play a key role as a source of easily digestible energy, which is readily available to the cells and organs in a dog's body.

There are genetic studies on dogs that demonstrate the presence of genes that codify enzymes that are responsible for the digestion of starch or carbohydrates - genes which are not present in wolves. This would support the assertion that one of the key events in the domestication of dogs was their adaptation to a diet rich in carbohydrates (Axelsson, 2012).

The carbohydrates in the True Instinct Original varieties are provided by wholegrain cereals such as barley, brown rice or oats.

What benefits do wholegrain cereals bring to a cat’s diet?

Wholegrain cereals provide a significant quantity of carbohydrates, alongside protein and other nutrients such as vitamins. Although cats do not have an absolute need for carbohydrates, they provide an excellent source of easily digestible energy, which can be used more efficiently by the cells and organs in their body.

The carbohydrates in the True Instinct Original varieties are provided by wholegrain cereals such as barley, brown rice or oats.

Preparation
What do we mean when we say our dry recipes are “gently cooked” to better preserve their nutrients?
When we say “gently cooked”, we’re referring to the low temperature used during the cooking process, which better respects nutrients such as proteins, essential fatty acids and vitamins.
What production process is used to make Nature's Variety Wet?

After preparing the recipe with high-quality ingredients, the meat and vegetables are mixed with the vitamins and minerals necessary for your dog or cat. The product is then inserted into packets which, once sealed, are steam cooked at an optimal temperature and pressure to ensure that the food inside is safe and delicious for its entire shelf life.

Where are Nature's Variety products made?

Our Wet range is produced in Germany, our Dry products are all produced in Spain (Monjos) and our freeze-dried products are made in the UK.

What does the freeze-drying process involve?

It's a dehydration process that doesn't use high temperatures. Water is removed under low pressure, which allows it to evaporate at a low temperature. This way, the nutrients (vitamins, antioxidants, etc.) remain intact, allowing for maximum preservation of the raw ingredients’ nutritional value

It is recommended to do a food transition from True Instinct to Nature's Variety?

Yes. Even though new recipes are very similar in terms of ingredient composition and nutrient analysis, they are not the same. For that reason, we recommend a smooth transition from one product to the other to avoid any unlikely digestive upset. In case the transition is not possible to do it (eg: TI product has been finished when buying new NV product), we have carried out a study with dogs and cats and no digestive signs have been observed. Therefore, we recommend the following one-week feeding steps to ensure an optimal transition:

Origin
What does guaranteed traceability from source for free-range chicken mean?

This guarantees that the chicken we use in our Selected recipes can be traced directly to the farm where the chickens were reared. This way, we know exactly where the chickens come from. From farm to product. This allows us to create a product of sustained high quality and that is controlled from start to finish.

What are trusted suppliers?
So that our customers can be sure they're giving their pets the highest quality food, we use ingredients from suppliers with who we have a long working history and whose production processes and quality-control systems we’re familiar with. This way, we can guarantee that the ingredients used in our food are both safe and of excellent quality.
